Kay Barnes is proud of her employment at the Metropolitan Inter-Church Agency (MICA). Maybe too proud. Because she mentioned it so often in bios, we thought we should check them out. What it led to was a goldmine, one we just have to share. You see, MICA had this newsletter which is archived at the Kansas City Library. The newsletter was filled with community events, programs...and seminars. But first, some history.
During the 2003 mayoral election an article surfaced from a 1976 Kansas City Woman magazine. In it, Barnes was featured as a sex therapist extraordinaire. The article has been pretty well publicized by now. Barnes’ typical reply to any questions about it, usually through her mouthpiece Steve Glorioso, is that she just dabbled in sex therapy, wasn’t very good at it, and gave it up after a few tries. That is a flat out lie.
The Source has documented at least fourteen seminars Barnes advertised over a five year period in the MICA newsletters. Between 1974 and 1979 Barnes advertised her “services” as a therapist in seminars with titles like “Human Sexuality,” “Expressing My Sexuality,” “Sexuality and Intimacy,” “My Sensual Self,” “Owning My Sexuality,” and “The New Intimacy”. Some of the early seminars were offered through the Jewish Community Center, but in 1976 Kay Waldo & Associates was launched with these sexually related seminars.
Those seminars were usually held on a Saturday in Barnes’ home. Who knows if her then teenage children were in the house at the time? Barnes charged around $40 or $50 for her “services”. We may never know what specific topics were discussed, or if there was any physical dimension to the “therapy.” But if we look back at the KC Woman article we get a hint with suggestions of “masturbation practice.”
It is no surprise that Barnes lies about her involvement in such a shady industry. Barnes has a history of telling lies to hide things she doesn’t want people to know.
Interesting Tidbit #1: In the KC Woman article, Barnes says she is an associate at the Center for Sexual Enrichment. The Center was based in the OBGYN department at KU Med. While few records exist of the Center itself, we found that it was run under the authority of a Dr. Kermit Kratz. Interestingly, the department and Kratz were well known as one of the major abortion providers of the time, including late-term abortions.
Interesting Tidbit #2: In the ads she placed in the newsletter, Barnes often gave a second number in addition to her home phone number. That number, 881-3750, was her official Jackson County legislative office phone. Barnes was illegally funneling sex therapy calls through her official office. That may be a sign of things to come, as later Barnes is often accused of misusing her official office.
Interesting Tidbit #3: MICA disbanded in 1979 after a sub-committee on teen pregnancy was found to be referring minor girls to abortion clinics (perhaps KU Med?). On that news the Catholic Church pulled their membership and several other denominations followed. Within a month MICA announced it was disbanding.
Next: Barnes is Absent
Oh my goodness, someone call the Missouri Highway Patrol, call Fox news, call the Pope in Rome, get a hold of the Lead Rabbi in Israel, call the Federal Election Commission, inform the Missouri Ethics Commission. Run, Run the sky is falling, America is going to collapse! The Mis-Source has uncovered public knowledge that Kay Barnes worked as a Sex Therapist 30 YEARS AGO! Oh, my God the heathens, are running amok.

Doesn't Geoff find this the least bit shocking? What about the part where she used her County office to run her business interests through? Times change but using public resources for private profit by an elected official never has. It is illegal.

I’m just shocked at how desperate the Republican Socialist have become.
p.s. Just an FYI, in the above story you have no crime.
