Earmarks have been a contentious element of the Washington process for some time now, creating yet another issue for politicians to grapple over.
And Claire McCaskill is ramping up her criticism of earmarks (despite her unabashed support for them in her voting record) as she continues to play both sides of this issue, which she did this week by publicizing her own piece of legislation to put a ban on earmarks.
As the election nears Senator McCaskill will get busy fence-sitting as often as possible, which is why it’s important to know who the real Claire is.
To wit: Claire McCaskill has voted for literally thousands of earmarks over the first five years of her term, worth billions of dollars. Just her up votes on four different spending bills totaled nearly 2,400 “yeas” for earmarks.
She also co-authored the stimulus bill, which was not only packed full of earmarks but was arguably one giant earmark itself.
Lloyd Smith, Exec. Dir. of the Missouri Republican Party, said, “After voting for thousands of earmarks that cost taxpayers billions of dollars, Claire McCaskill now claims she wants to ban them. Her hypocrisy proves once again that Missourians simply cannot trust Chameleon Claire.”
In 2007 Claire McCaskill claimed that when it comes to the earmark debacle she is “part of the problem”.
Politicians who talk out of both sides of their mouths and look out only for themselves are the biggest part of the problem, and no earmark legislation can keep McCaskill from being bunched with that crowd.
