It seems that the McCaskill-Obama political marriage is further fracturing in the lead-up to 2012 as Claire McCaskill moves to rhetorically distance herself from one of her closest allies.
McCaskill was one of the first Senators to publically endorse then-Senator Obama in his quest for the White House three years ago, but now she is now one of the first Senators to back away from Obama’s pursuit for a second presidential term.
From Politico by way of eMissourian:
A member of Obama’s team told Politico that McCaskill won’t be leading the parade of the president’s defenders and her absence is a “potential problem.”
While Claire has yet to take on Obama in a meaningful way on policy (the few areas she has 'stood up' to Obama were assured never to reach the stage of a serious confrontation), it does not bode particularly well for Obama that his allies are continuing to distance themselves.
Right now 2012 is continuing to look a lot like 2010 - and Claire doesn't seem to have learned any lessons from watching Robin Carnahan's self destructive waffling. Claire needs to decide whether she's in or out of the Obama fan club.
