Kelley Stahlin, the appointed County Clerk who is temporarily in charge of elections in Buchanan County, just got slapped with a $1,000 fine for failing to file campaign finance reports not once but three times.
In other words - the person who is supposed to be making sure everyone else follows the rules couldn't be bothered to follow them herself.
Of all the possible offices where a candidate could fail to file disclosure forms, County Clerk rates highest in terms of irony.
Filing campaign disclosures is basically a job qualification for an office like county clerk. When the MEC needs to wade in with a four-figure fine over simple rules - it raises an important question about competence.
How can we be sure that Buchanan County's elections will be properly conducted under Stahlin's watch? Being a County Clerk is a complicated and demanding job, and Stahlin's ethics problems cast doubts on her ability to manage the job.
