After Robin Carnahan's busy schedule 'prevented' her from meeting President Obama for a Missouri fundraiser, many wondered if she would show up to Obama's 'main street' tour in Macon today. For a moment there it seemed just as likely that she'd attend the anti-Obama rally, given her campaign's deliberate decision to distance herself from the President (although as we noted before, the snub may have been mutual).
Now it seems like the Carnahan campaign is having trouble sticking to its guns. In a surprise announcement (hat tip to 24th State), Carnahan canceled a dinner event to spend some time with Obama. Apparently some scheduling commitments are more important than others.
Carnahan got cold feet, but the sudden reversal is only going to add to speculation about their relationship and about Carnahan's campaign strategy. What's the point of skipping a Presidential fundraiser if she's going to show up to an Obama event only weeks later? That sounds like the worst of both worlds: all of the association, none of the benefits.
Carnahan's erratic decision-making might be explained by her declining poll numbers. We should plan on seeing more of the same in the future.
