The Springfield News-Leader recently reported on a fresh setback for Alternative Opportunities:
A Cole County judge has extended a temporary restraining order against the state of Missouri from turning over a suburban St. Louis motor vehicle license office to a Springfield non-profit, pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed by the current contractor.
The next hearing for the case will be on April 23. It'll be a while before this gets resolved, but in the meantime, a few key points are worth remembering:
Alternative Opportunities has been at the center of this controversy.
(1) Nixon's fee office bidding system was billed as a 'nonpartisan' way to hand out fee offices, but has yielded the opposite result. Democrat political donors have won all but a handful of the most lucrative offices.
(2) Nixon's bidding system has been caught treating identical bids in different ways, with the effect of helping Democrat political donors to win more fee offices.
(3) Alternative Opportunities and James Ryan Williams were each able to predict in advance how many fee offices they would receive: if the bidding process was truly competitive, how could they do this?
(4) Alternative Opportunities was caught violating the rules of the bidding process for ten fee offices, which were then revoked. The violation was not discovered by the Department of Revenue: it was found and exposed by Chad Livengood.
(5) Alternative Opportunities executives made $17.4 million by forming and selling a company that has an exclusive contract to provide management services to Alternative Opportunities. Sourcing management of the fee offices to this company was how they violated the contracts.
That's not all - there's an abundance of information to suggest that the fee office bidding system is as corrupt as it gets. That's why we welcomed the lawsuit when we first heard about it. It needs a healthy dose of sunlight.
