Ike Skelton filed his quarterly finance report yesterday. He raised a not-insignificant $491,825. But is that a testament to his thirty years in Congress representing the 4th District, or his hard left turn straight into Pelosi's arms? His contributions clarify a bit about how Skelton is running his campaign and who it represents.
Skelton raised $72,000 from Missouri residents - or only 20% of each dollar he raised. This is not impressive amount given Skelton's long tenure, but it's also not entirely unexpected. The district didn't elect Nancy Pelosi, and with Skelton's recent votes, it can be hard to tell the difference between the two.
Where’s the pay-off? Right here:
Skelton's re-election bid is being enthusiastically financed by PACs such as SEIU, to the tune of $192,000. We’re sure that Big Labor will be equally enthusiastic in reminding him who got him elected – and to ensure that he continues his support for abolishing secret ballots in union elections. His district may not support the controversial plan which will lead to worker intimidation, but Skelton’s supporters and their deep pockets do.
He also has important constituencies in Virginia and Washington D.C. who are helping him with over $200,000 in contributions. They might be 1,000 miles away, but we're sure their concerns will be heard when the next big vote comes around.
Skelton will spend most of this trying to convince the 4th District that he’s not a Liberal, which is more depressing than amusing.
He raises money like a Pelosi Liberal, votes like a Pelosi Liberal... why not just come clean with the district? A campaign can only run for so long on denial.
