Paul Begala recently penned an article in the Huffington Post about why he thinks Tommy Sowers is a good challenger for Congresswoman Emerson. He also inadvertently explains why Sowers is unelectable: he doesn't represent the district.
Begala is right about the district being Republican. McCain took 62% of the vote and Bush took 64% in 2004. To anyone who looks at its election history, it's a safe Republican district with a strongly entrenched incumbent.
That might be why Tommy Two-Tones hasn't been able to get any traction in the 8th District district. Despite raising $205,000 in his first quarter, only 11.1% of that money came from the district. Remove family members and the number goes down further.
The people who matter - the voters - aren't supporting him.
It's hypocritical, to say the least, for Two-Tones to call Emerson an outsider. He raised more money from New York than Missouri, attacking a popular elected official while he gets bankrolled by Wall Street.
The writing is on the wall, for anyone who's willing to read it. Tommy's views are antagonistic to the voters of the 8th District. Whether his campaign is intentionally contradictory or delusional isn't clear yet, but in the end it all works out the same.

I must say I tried to talk him out of it. The district, I said, is too Republican, and the election cycle too challenging. Tommy would have none of it. This is his home, he said, and this is his duty. (Link)
