In a reluctant step away from civilized society and towards his troubled future, Jeff Smith has informed WashU that he will no longer be teaching there. The move doesn’t tell us much about his political fate, but it does impress the seriousness of his situation.
The involved parties won't confirm anything except that Jeff is 'considering' resigning. As we previously argued, sudden resignations in politics typically preempt the less pleasant alternative of being forced out – as long as you think you’ve got a fighting chance, why throw in the towel?
We had wondered if Skip Ohlsen was selling Jeff to the Feds, in a bid to reduce the legal troubles that inevitably surround his exploits. Ohlsen's attorney has since released a statement: "This bit about Ohlsen singing like a canary is just crazy." He sounds almost offended - certainly Skip would hold himself to a higher standard of conduct!
