Some interesting news came out of St. Louis this week when 2008 Democrat Lieutenant Governor Candidate Sam Page announced he would run for the Missouri Senate in 2010 to succeed the term-limited Joan Bray (D-24th). Page, who is universally known in both Democrat and Republican circles for being a lackluster campaigner must think he is the anointed Democrat for the seat? Page fell flat when going toe-to-toe against Peter Kinder, and was plagued by his voting record throughout the Lt. Governor campaign. Doc Page was especially frustrated during the campaign when the Kinder campaign began to hit close to home when they started to unveil his VERY friendly record on Medicare Reimbursement levels that helped line his own pocket. I guess Page was OK during the campaign trying to make healthcare an issue, just when it wasn’t about his record on healthcare.
Just as quickly as Page jumped in, other St. Louis area Democrats have begun to show an interest for the seat. Representative Jake Zimmerman and St. Louis County Councilwoman Barbara Fraser have indicated they might run for the seat.
Look for this to be a classic “who can out-liberal the other” battle for the Democratic Nomination for the Senate. Zimmerman, a former desk lackey for Bob Holden and Jay Nixon translated his experience in their offices to carve out a niche as water carrier for every liberal/socialist policy that he can get his hands on in the Missouri House. Fraser is your classic St. Louis County liberal politician who is on a crusade to pursue smoking bans wherever she can get one. I am sure she will have a lot of great ideas for the Missouri Senate during this time of economic challenge for our state and country. Perhaps if she becomes a senator she can pry herself away from being a “one note band” politician and work for the people of the 24th district?
I guess the good ol’ doc thinks he has earned a senate seat by losing a statewide election in a year when Democrats held the upper hand both statewide and nationally? Not so fast says St. Louis area Democrats---Look for this to be a bitter primary.
